A couple weeks ago I had a very sporadic need to try a juice cleanse. I've always wanted to give into the hype, but there never seemed like a good time to do a cleanse. And there still never is a good time to do it, so I just had to bite the bullet and go for it. I did a 3-day Real Good Juice Co juice cleanse and I have lived to tell about it.
The cleanse I did included 5 juices and 1 homemade smoothie per day. The picture above were my juices for the first day, so it is basically broken down into 2 green juices and 1 beet juice (to get all the veggies in for the day) and 2 thicker almond-milk juices with fattier content to keep you full. Then, my smoothie in the morning was my everyday smoothie which contains: almond milk, spinach, protein powder, frozen blueberries, flax seed and spirulina. Annnnnnddd that was that.
Here are some typical questions I got after I told people about the cleanse. Let me know if you have any others I can answer!
Was I hungry throughout it? - Surprisingly not at all. Sometimes I didn't even want the juice because I felt like I just drank one 5 minutes ago, but did anyways to get my nutrients in.
Did it affect my workouts? - Again, surprisingly no. I didn't do crazy heavy lifting, but I continued to do cardio and yoga on the days I cleansed and my energy felt fine.
Did I lose weight? - I really don't know because I haven't weighed myself in a while, but I felt way less bloated by the end.
What did you like about it? - I liked that my day of consumption was already figured out for me and I didn't have to pack food for all day at work. I just made my smoothie and packed the juices, quick and simple. I also liked the mental aspect of it. I'm very competitive and I like to think that once I set my mind to something, I'm going to follow through with it. And I did just that with this cleanse. I didn't have any slip ups or moments of weakness. I decided to do the cleanse, stuck with it, and I was proud of myself for that.
What did you not like about it? - There were only 2 drawbacks I felt from this cleanse. It has nothing to do with craving real food because honestly I didn't crave anything; I stayed focused on the juices and nothing else. The drawbacks for me were the constant headaches I had and the constant thirst. I was drinking plenty of water (and by plenty I mean I drink 10-15 cups of water a day!!) so I'm not sure why either of those outcomes were happening. Next time I do a cleanse, I will have to look into that more.
What would I have done differently? - I would have picked a time where I could ease back into normal eating. I finished the juice cleanse on a Thursday and that Friday was my mom's birthday, which included going out to a great Italian restaurant and drinking at a dueling piano bar! There was no way I could ease my way back into my normal eating habits with a night like that. But, like I said before, there is no great time to cleanse, so I had to work with what I had.
Do I recommend trying a juice cleanse to others? - Yes! Try it! It's not as miserable as people complain about. Just set your mind to do it and it'll be over in 3 days before you know it. It changed my mindset about how big of meals I need and switched it over to knowing I can handle smaller, more frequent meals, without being hungry all day. It also helped me mentally get back on track to eating very healthy Monday-Thursday so that I don't have to worry about health over the weekends.
Everyone's Juice Cleanse experience is going to be different, but I hope you got some insight on mine! Tune in to see what health trend I cave into next....
PS> I highly, highly DON'T recommend this drink above. It was one of the juices of the cleanse (and I'm sure most of the cleanses have one of these options) that is lemon juice, maple syrup and CAYENNE PEPPER. And when I say cayenne pepper with all caps, I mean not just a sprinkle of it, but easily 2 tbsp of it that was sitting at the bottom. I was coughing up a storm and could not finish this drink. But then again, one of my client's said she drinks this on the reg, so whatever floats your boat... You heard the warning here first...
