There are a ton of markets all around London and people rave about them all the time. Today we had the afternoon free after orientation so we tried out our first food market called the Exmouth Market. It is a cobblestone street that is filled with about 15 gourmet food tents. These tents are not just like normal food trucks that have sandwiches, smoothies, and wraps... These have huge grills and saute pans filled with flavorful meats, rices, vegetables, casseroles, risotto, and anything you could imagine. It had all different cultural cuisines such as German sausages, Mediterranean hummus meals, Korean BBQ, Italian pastas, Mexican burritos, etc- I could go on and on!
We walked all along the street to scan all of our options, but that could have been a bad idea because we couldn't make a decision! Everything looked amazing and I definitely will be back to try the burritos, bbq pork, and wait for it... homemade pasta! The pasta tent is right outside their actual Italian restaurant and serves up pasta in different sauces and focaccia bread all in a little box to-go. It looked and smelled of garlicy yumminess.
I chose to have a dish of lamb and chicken patties on a bed of lettuce, cabbage, carrots, and onions. I didn't put dressing on it because it looked too heavy like mayo or ranch, and it didn't need it because the meats were juicy and filled with spices! As you can tell from the picture, the dish was very bright and colorful, and a very generous portion size that filled me up! I've never had lamb patties before, and it was a really good change from chicken, which I always eat.
I went with like 10 people and most of us got different things, and they all looked amazing! The market is perfectly placed on the walk home from the university and it's open Monday through Friday 11-3pm. This means the food tents will be a once a week place for me to have lunch after class. I usually don't like to explore with food carts because you can't exactly tell what is in the dish or what you're going to get, but I'm loving exploring the different options here! I'm keeping an open mind and can't wait to explore the copious amounts of cuisine in London.
