Before going to the land down under, I didn’t know what types of food are categorized as Australian or New Zealand. After going and eating lots (and lots), I still don’t know! I asked every tour guide or local we met “So what restaurant has the best Australian/NZ food in the area?” And every time they said they don’t really have a certain type of food, but there’s good kangaroo at ____ if you want.
Nope. Nope. Nope. Don’t want kangaroo.
I’ll admit, I did try kangaroo jerky as part of a tour, but I took one little nibble and did not enjoy it. It literally tastes like beef, but I couldn't get over the fact that it's a kangaroo.
Anyways, throughout my hunt to find the best Aussie food, I had many great meals. The most noteworthy is both countries’ brekky (aka breakfast) culture that is TO DIE FOR. It’s depressing that I have to go back to drinking protein shakes or having oatmeal for breakfast everyday…
Here are my favorite meals, what’s in them and where I enjoyed them.
Shakshuka – from Bondi Wholefoods in Sydney, Australia
For those that don’t know, shakshuka is a dish of eggs poached in a sauce of tomatoes, vegetables and spices. I’ve always wanted to try it, but this was the first time I had it. And I’m hooked.
This shakshuka consisted of a flavorful tomato sauce, sautéed zucchini, poached eggs and cilantro with a side of toasted multi-grain toast with avocado and butter.
Acai Antioxidant Bowl- from Bondi Wholefoods in Sydney, Australia
This acai bowl contained the smoothie made of acai, banana and almond milk, topped with their homemade nuts and granola mixture, dried coconut, strawberries, blueberries and bananas. I will definitely be making this at home.
Side note- Bondi Wholefoods is a not Wholefoods like in America. It is a café/restaurant with a small health food grocery section! We need more of these here.
Shepherd’s Delight Burger & Sweet Potato Fries- from Grill’d in Cairns, Australia
Filled in between this low-carb, gluten free bun is a grass fed lean lamb patty, Dijon mustard, sliced parmesan, cole slaw and pickles. And those sweet potato fries had big chunks of sea salt that made this meal overall addictive.
Bircher Muesli with Yogurt- from Jack and Hill Café in Brisbane, Australia
Muesli is a staple breakfast item in Australia and New Zealand. It is the oatmeal of their breakfast, but better. Bircher muesli is fancier muesli with a lot of great additives that make it a very filling and sweet.
This bircher muesli was deconstructed in a jar, for us to assemble and enjoy. On the bottom is the toasted muesli with dried fruit, then greek yogurt, strawberries, apples, more yogurt, and bananas. There is a touch of milk on the side to add to the creamy consistency.
I’ve already starting making batches of my own bircher muesli that are soaking overnight in the fridge. Recipes to come!
Green Brekky- from Bay Leaf Café in Byron Bay, Australia
Just realized this is the fourth breakfast meal I am talking about, so clearly I wasn’t lying when I said their brekky culture is TO DIE FOR. All caps are needed to emphasize.
This Green Brekky consists of two poached eggs over sautéed spinach, kale, broccoli, quinoa, avocado, flax seeds, sunflower seeds, topped with cilantro and pink Hawaiian salt. I want to make this everyday, I just know it won’t be quite as amazing as this was.
Elegant High Tea- from the Hilton Hotel in Auckland, New Zealand
Even though we weren’t in London, we still felt the need to do proper high tea in New Zealand. And by proper I mean high tea with sides of peach bellinis and expresso martinis…
But I’m here to talk about the food. The first part of the meal was the savory items with cheesy scones and 5 types of open face sammies. Delish!
The second part of the high tea meal was the sweet items with scones, cakes, mouses, cakes and custards. Delish x2.
I ate so many more great meals, but that would be so boring to keep talking about every single thing I ate, so I'll leave you with those top 6. If you are going to the land down under anytime in the future, hit me up for a great, detailed food guide for your trip!
